FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who is required to file a Form 11 Income Tax Return in Ireland?
In Ireland, you must file a Form 11 if you are considered a “chargeable person” by Revenue. This generally includes self-employed individuals, sole traders, and company directors. You are also required to file if you have a gross non-PAYE income of €30,000 or more, or a net taxable non-PAYE income of €5,000 or more from sources such as rental properties, foreign income, or investment dividends. Even if your business made a loss, you must still file a return to remain compliant and to carry those losses forward.
What is the "Pay and File" deadline for the current tax year?
The standard statutory deadline for filing your annual return and paying the balance of tax is 31 October each year. However, if you use the Revenue Online Service (ROS) to both pay and file, you can typically benefit from an extended deadline, which usually falls in mid-November. Missing these deadlines can result in a surcharge of 5% (up to €12,695) if filed within two months, or 10% (up to €63,485) if filed later, so it is vital to have your accounts prepared well in advance.
What is Preliminary Tax and how is it calculated?
Preliminary Tax is an estimate of the income tax, PRSI, and USC you expect to pay for the current tax year. It must be paid by the 31 October deadline. To avoid interest charges for underpayment, you must pay at least one of the following:
  • 100% of your tax liability for the previous year.
  • 90% of your tax liability for the current year.
  • 105% of your tax liability for the pre-preceding year (only if paying by direct debit). Most small businesses choose the 100% rule as it provides the most certainty when planning cash flow.
What business expenses can I claim to reduce my tax bill?
To be tax-deductible, an expense must be incurred “wholly and exclusively” for the purposes of your trade. Common allowable expenses include accountancy fees, rent and rates for business premises, light and heat, insurance, and interest on business loans. If you work from home, you can claim a proportion of your household bills. It is important to remember that capital expenditure (such as purchasing a vehicle or computer equipment) is handled differently through Capital Allowances, which allow you to write off the cost of the asset over eight years.
