FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are the current VAT registration thresholds for Irish businesses?
In Ireland, you are legally required to register for Value-Added Tax (VAT) if your annual turnover exceeds certain limits within a rolling 12-month period. For businesses primarily providing services, the threshold is €XXXXX.
For those primarily supplying goods, the threshold is €XXXX. If your business is below these levels, you may still choose to register voluntarily to reclaim VAT on business expenses, which can be particularly beneficial during a start-up phase.
How often do I need to file a VAT 3 return with Revenue?
The standard filing period for VAT in Ireland is bi-monthly (every two months), covering periods such as January/February or March/April.
However, if your annual VAT liability is relatively low (between €3,001 and €14,400), Revenue may authorise four-monthly filings.
For liabilities of €3,000 or less, you may be eligible for six-monthly returns. Conversely, businesses that are consistently in a repayment position can request to file monthly to improve cash flow.
What are the deadlines for filing VAT returns and making payments?
VAT returns must be filed, and the corresponding tax paid, by the 19th day of the month following the end of the taxable period. For example, the return for the January/February period is due by 19th March.
However, for businesses using the Revenue Online Service (ROS) to file and pay electronically, this deadline is extended to the 23rd day of that month.
Failure to meet these deadlines can result in statutory interest charges and penalties.
What is the Annual Return of Trading Details (RTD) and is it mandatory?
Yes, the Annual Return of Trading Details (RTD) is a mandatory requirement for all VAT-registered businesses in Ireland.
Unlike the periodic VAT 3 returns which show the tax due, the RTD provides a summary of the total value of all goods and services sold and purchased during the entire registration year, broken down by VAT rate.
It is typically due within 23 days of the end of your accounting period and is used by Revenue to ensure the accuracy of your periodic filings.
